"Bob Barr Comments on the Future of Internet Gambling"

Via:PokerNewsDaily.comThe evidence keeps mounting that Capitol Hill is going to address the issue of internet gambling head-on. Recently, a column from noted libertarian politician Bob Barr suggested that legislation clarifying the legal standing of internet gambling is on the horizon.

On Monday, Barr published the latest installment of “The Barr Code,” his weekly column in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The entry, entitled “Get ready to ante up to Congress,” predicted that Congressman Barney Frank’s (D-MA) Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act (HR 2267) would be heard in Congress sometime this fall. Barr pointed out that in addition to Frank’s bill, which seeks to reverse the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) and implement a government-run system to tax and license online gaming venues, there are at least two other pieces of legislation designed to reverse the actions of the UIGEA. In addition to Frank’s aforementioned bill, Frank also authored the Reasonable Prudence in Regulation Act, (HR 2266) which, if passed, would delay the December compliance date for U.S. financial institutions to meet UIGEA standards by one year.

Barr went on to discuss one of the major causes behind the growing support for regulated online gambling: the economy. When discussing the possible hearings on the Frank bill, Barr noted, “It is likely that testimony in support of the legislation will be based as much on economics as on the principle that individuals should be able to gamble online if they want to.” The former Presidential candidate then went on to add what many online gambling supporters have been saying for some time: “The economics of taxing Internet gambling are indeed impressive.”

According to Barr’s calculations, which are based on a PricewaterhouseCoopers study, the U.S. Government stands to gain $51 billion during the first decade online casinos are in operation, a sum that has many in Washington suddenly taking interest in the issue. Even some of the traditional opponents of online gambling, like brick-and-mortar casinos, are coming onboard. Barr cited Poker Players Alliance (PPA) Executive Director John Pappas when discussing the growing support from these land-based institutions. Pappas pointed out that in countries in which online gambling has a less murky legal standing, many players take their gambling interests into nearby casinos as well. Read Full Stroy

"2 Months, $2 Million: Team Opens Boot Camp"

Via: PokerNewsDaily.comOn this week’s installment of the G4 online poker reality show “2 Months, $2 Million,” the cast opened boot camp, taking on four students for $7,500 each. In the end, the group earned $106,000 for the week. The show airs on Wednesdays at 8:00pm ET.

The episode began in the desert, with Emil Patel refusing to ride a dune buggy. Housemate Dani Stern explained the reason: “He didn’t want to get sand in his eyes.” Brian Roberts attempted to spray sand on Patel using his dune buggy, but ultimately becapoker skills me stuck. Entering the sixth week of “2 Months, $2 Million,” the team was up a scant $35,000 total. Roberts noted, “We haven’t been playing super high. Something has to be done.”

Rather than play big, the “2 Months, $2 Million” cast sought to extend their to others through training. Jay Rosenkrantz told G4 cameras, “Everyone needs to re-center, so hopefully a little bit of teaching will bring everyone back to Earth.” Stern elaborated, “Teaching other people how to play, in many ways, helps your own game. Even though we’re helping out the other guys, it definitely is going to help us get back on track.”

Four boot campers turned out at the Las Vegas “2 Months, $2 Million” home. Harry “UgotaBanana” Kaczka is 18 years-old and just graduated high school. He also dropped $100,000 the day before filming started and seemed to have a chip on his shoulder throughout the episode. Also making the trip were Dave “NLsoldier” Schnettler, Russian-born Wladimir “insyder19” Taschner, and U.K. native Ben “pokiethepanda” Middleton. The group headed to the war room, where Kaczka’s woes continued, losing a $20,000 pot despite turning the nuts.

The “2 Months, $2 Million” team brought showed their protégés winning strategies of the game, while Middleton was brought into the Tilt Room to release aggression on several watermelons. After a hard day’s work, the cast hit the town, but rented a party bus since Kaczka is underage. Everyone but Kaczka partied at Blush at the Wynn, while two women were dispatched to the bus to keep the lone minor company. Middleton, meanwhile, overcame reticence at the bar by dancing with several women. Patel explained, “Ben was shy at first, but he gained some confidence as the night moved on.” Read Full Story

"WSOP on ESPN Field Makes the Money"

Via: PokerNewsDaily.com Day 4 unfolded in front of ESPN cameras at the 2009 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event. November Nine member Phil Ivey presided over the feature table, while a pair of former Main Event champions headlined Table Two.

In the show’s opening montage, Ivey explained his take on the money bubble, which had yet to burst at the 2009 WSOP Main Event: “The money is nice. The money is great. Winning is definitely more important at this stage in the game.” The chip leader entering Day 4 was Team PokerStars Pro member Bertrand “Elky” Grospellier. Others in the field included 2005 Main Event winner Joe Hachem, 2008 champion Peter Eastgate, and Surindar Sunar, who all appeared at Table Two. The ESPN feature table included Ivey, who noted that he had bought UFC tickets for that night.

In the first hand shown, Ivey raised to 11,000 with A-10 of hearts and Bernhard Perner made the call with Q-9. The clop came 10-J-A and Perner bet 16,500 with his straight draw. Ivey made the call and the turn fell a three. Perner fired out 27,500 chips and Ivey once again called behind. The river was a nine and Perner finally slowed down and checked. Ivey bet 50,000, prompting a fold from Perner and securing the 166,500 chip pot for the “Tiger Woods of Poker.”

Elsewhere in the field, Jeff Norman ousted 2009 dual bracelet winner Greg “FBT” Mueller with pocket aces against Mueller’s pocket sixes. “I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here” winner Lou Diamond Phillips doubled up J.C. Tran with pocket tens against Tran’s wired pair of aces. Denise Malloy, a grandmother of three, made quads in a hand against John Monnette.

At Table Two, the two Main Event champions squared off. Eastgate raised to 10,500 with A-10 of clubs and Hachem called from the big blind with 8-6, including the six of diamonds. The flop came 5-7-10, all diamonds, and the action went check-check. The turn was another five. Hachem bet out 18,000 and Eastgate called to see a river nine, giving Hachem a straight. Hachem bet 25,000 and Eastgate folded, prompting the following line from the Aussie: “Think you can raise my blind with A-10? You need to muck A-10.”

Former World Poker Tour (WPT) Bellagio Cup winner Kevin “BeL0WaB0Ve” Saul tangled with Brian Shapiro. In the hand, Shapiro rivered a straight and then pointed to Saul and exclaimed, “You deserve that because you’re arrogant.” Jack Effel issued Shapiro a warning for excessive celebration and, upon Saul complaining that Shapiro targeted him with brash comments, a one hand penalty was issued. Meanwhile, Ivey’s run of cards continued, as the Full Tilt Poker pro made quads with 8-7 on a 7-J-7-8-7 board.

The Full Tilt-sponsored “Deal Me In” featured Chris Ferguson at the 2004 WSOP Main Event. The feature was about protecting your hand. Meanwhile, Ivey was dealt pocket kings in a hand against Keven “Stamdogg” Stammen. ESPN announcer Norman Chad commented, “Phil Ivey with pocket kings? I think that’s illegal in 45 states.” Ivey scooped a 214,500 chip pot in the process, while Dan Harrington was shown donning a neck brace. Chad quipped, “Did he have a bad flop?” and then proceeded to laugh.Read Full Story

"Gabriel Aminov Leads WPT Borgata Poker Open"

Via:PokerNewsDaily.com A total of 1,018 runners turned out for the World Poker Tour’s (WPT) Borgata Poker Open. Now, 555 players remain, led by New York’s Gabriel Aminov. The winner of the $3,500 buy-in tournament will pocket $925,000.

Two starting days played out over the weekend at the Borgata Poker Open, the largest WPT tournament ever held. The top 100 players will take home money from the East Coast event, with the top six convening for the televised final table, which will air as part of Season VIII of the WPT on Fox Sports Net. Among those still in contention is Poker News Daily Guest Columnist and ESPN.com “Inside Deal” host Bernard Lee, who will come armed to Day 2 play on Monday with 15,700 chips, good for 524th overall. Lee won a race late in the day holding pocket eights against A-10 when the board ran out 7-7-2-2-3.

On the atmosphere at the Borgata, Lee told Poker News Daily, “This feels just like the old days. We used to get 600, 700, or 800 people all of the time. It feels like it’s during the boom of the WPT. It just shows you the interest people have and that the Borgata runs a first-class operation.” Among those who hit the rails during play on Sunday on Day 1B were Will “The Thrill” Failla, who ran kings into aces, and Matt “All In At 420” Stout, who came out on the short end of a race holding A-K to Roy Winston’s pocket tens.

Many of the game’s top pros are not in Atlantic City for the Borgata Poker Open. Instead, they made the trek to London, site of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Europe. Lee, however, noted that the running of the 2009 PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) may have also cut into attendance: “There was also the WCOOP Main Event going on yesterday and a lot of people had to make the decision to play in one or the other. Some people didn’t come here because it was a smaller buy-in event and the WCOOP Main Event will have a $10 million guarantee.” First place in the PokerStars tournament will pay $1.7 million, nearly double the grand prize at the Borgata. "Terrence Chan (Unassigned) Wins WCOOP Limit Hold’em Event"

Via:PokerNewsDaily.comDuring the PokerStars Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) in April, Terrence “Unassigned” Chan made headlines by winning both the high- and mid-stakes versions of Event #20 (Six-Max Limit Hold’em) on the same day, earning him more than $185,000. It was an accomplishment deemed nearly unachievable by poker aficionados.

On September 18th, Chan once again made headlines in the poker world, this time in the PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP). Again, it was Six-Max Limit Hold’em and, once again, Chan was victorious, besting a 437-player field in the $1,000 buy-in Event #39 for a payday of $83,030.

Chan entered the final table second in chips and ultimately drew an appealing heads-up match against Cesar “makavelyces” Fuentes, widely considered one of the best high-stakes online tournament players in the world. They began play nearly even in chips with around two million each and it was Fuentes who grabbed control early, cutting Chan’s stack down to 300,000. Chan doubled up and then quickly took over the chip lead when his pocket kings made a full house on a Kd-Qd-4d-Th-Qh board.

Chan chipped away at Fuentes’ stack and eventually Fuentes got the last of his chips in pre-flop with pocket nines against Chan’s Kh-Jc. The Kd-Qc-Qs flop left Fuentes drawing thin and the turn and river were no help, sending him out in second place for $61,180. Chan, meanwhile, added another prestigious Limit Hold’em title to his record as well as his first WCOOP bracelet.

Chan was updating his blog and Twitter account during his run in Event # 39 and expressed his contentment following the victory: “Insane. Just…insane. I kinda run good in these events, y’know?” He also noted in his blog that he hadn’t cashed in his first five WCOOP events of this year’s series, saying, “I have been frustrated in all of them, resulting in poor decisions in many of them.” That frustration has surely dissipated.Read Full Story

"WPT Borgata Poker Open Attracts Over 1,000 Players"

Via:PokerNewsDaily.com
A $3,500 buy-in attracted over 1,000 players to the Borgata Poker Open, a stop on the World Poker Tour (WPT) circuit. As of Noon ET on Sunday, 1,003 players had entered, which included the 326 player field from Day 1A.

Over 675 players had thrown their hats into the ring on Day 1B. The tournament coincides with World Series of Poker (WSOP) Europe festivities in London, but still attracted a bevy of poker superstars to the East Coast casino. At the end of Day 1A, Frank Molinari stood tall over the rest of the field with 169,000 chips. Hot on his heels was Jeremy Brown, who will come armed to Day 2 on Monday with 156,425. One of the top pros to survive Day 1A was Steve Brecher, the champion of the Bay 101 Shooting Star tournament during Season VII of the WPT. Brecher also made a final table during Season II of the WPT, taking sixth in the end-of-season Championship event for $232,000.

Among those making waves on Day 1A was 2008 WSOP November Nine member David “Chino” Rheem. A former WPT Champion, Rheem ascended to the top of the chip counts during play on Saturday, but found himself out of the tournament following the dinner break. Rheem ran a rivered flush into quad deuces after an error by Sonny Waila on the turn resulted in a string bet. Rheem bet the river after making a flush, but his opponent’s pocket twos had him dominated. Rheem pushed with a flush draw on the very next hand, but it failed to materialize against an opponent’s pocket aces.

Others who took to the felts on Day 1A were Ultimate Bet pro Michael Binger, Matt Matros, Kathy Liebert, and Nancy Todd Tyner. Holding one of the largest chip stacks after the first of two starting days is Jonathan “FieryJustice” Little, a two-time WPT event winner. Little took down the Season VI Mirage Poker Showdown for $1.1 million and promptly emerged victorious from the field in the Foxwoods World Poker Finals last season for another $1.1 million. He is fresh off an eighth place showing in the WPT Merit Cyprus Classic for nearly $40,000.Read Full Story

Both shows will air prior to college football. Vanessa Rousso, a member of Team PokerStars Pro, commented in a press release distributed by the online poker site on Friday, “Each year at the World Series of Poker, I make it a point to play in Ante Up for Africa. It’s amazing that PokerStars hosted the event in Monte Carlo to help a worthy cause and bring some fun to the table during one of their biggest events of the year.” In this author’s home market, the show does not air on September 19th, but rather only the 26th. Viewers are encouraged to check their local listings for details, as college football dates, times, and channels vary by market.

The tournament took place in April in the storied European principality during the Monte Carlo Grand Final festivities. The casino is the host venue for the end-of-season European Poker Tour (EPT) event and attracted a star-studded lineup of celebrities and poker players for the Ante Up for Africa contest. Among those in attendance were St. Louis rapper Nelly, singer Christina Milian, The Dream, “Heroes” actor James Kyson Lee, “Sex in the City” actor Jason Lewis, Good Charlotte band member Joel Madden, U.K. presenter Kirsty Gallacher, rapper Bruno “Kool Shen” Lopes, F1 racer Nico Rosberg, Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina, and rugby players Sebastien Chabal and Mike Tindall.

Representing Team PokerStars Pro were Rousso, 2004 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event Champion Greg Raymer, 2005 Champion Joe Hachem, 2008 Champion Peter Eastgate, Italian poker pro Dario Minieri, Victor Ramdin, and Caesars Cup Captain Daniel Negreanu. The €4,000 buy-in tournament generated more than €260,000 for the Ante Up for Africa charity, which raises money and awareness for victims of the crisis in Darfur. A total of €160,000 was raised through tournament buy-ins, while PokerStars generously kicked in an additional €100,000.

Among those prizes awarded were a trip to the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure in 2010. The tournament, which is held annually in the Bahamas, serves as the lone Western Hemisphere stop on the EPT circuit. A tournament summary distributed by the world’s largest online poker site offered the following insight into the ongoing Darfur crisis: “More than 400,000 people have died and more than four million have lost their homes in Darfur since the conflict began. To date, Ante Up For Africa has raised close to $2 million for the cause.”Read Full Story

"Patrik Selin Reveals Plans for Bodog Network"

Via:PokerNewsDaily.com

Recently, Bodog officials announced the launch of the Bodog Network, which will begin accepting non-Bodog domain names next year. At its head is Patrik Selin, a former executive of the Ongame Network. Selin sat down with Poker News Daily to review the new venture.

Poker News Daily: Talk about the idea of developing the Bodog Network. How did it originate?

Selin: The three existing Bodog brand licensees have a respectable level of liquidity, but as I looked around the market, I felt that I could do something new by combining their existing liquidity and strong brands with my experience in the network space. We have a number of new approaches to database protection and rakeback that I believe can help reshape the poker network model, but attempting to launch this from scratch with no liquidity under a new brand would have been quite difficult. I don’t think Bodog was looking to do this, but I assembled a team and the business plan and made the proposal to Calvin Ayre and BodogBrand.

Once the general deal regarding licensing the brand was agreed to in principle, I needed to approach the three brand licensees to get a contractual commitment from each in order to ensure that the liquidity base would be there out of the gate. Then, I had all of the pieces I needed. The strength of the brand was obvious to me, but I felt that if I could secure the rights to use the brand, while also securing commitments from the existing brand licensees, I could take what I’ve learned in the market to turn what was, in effect, a brand-licensee-only network into something that could be made available to the global marketplace. It was a long negotiation and didn’t happen overnight, but I am extremely excited to have been able to put this together. We’re going to do something great here.

PND: Prior to the Network, were the player bases of the individual Bodog licensees separated? Or how does the Network change the status quo?

Selin: From a legal perspective, the Network changes the status quo in the sense that I have now acquired the source to the proprietary Bodog poker product. However, while all three brand licensees naturally maintain and protect their own customer databases, the liquidity has always been shared, so in that sense there is no immediate impact on the player bases. This is only the short-term situation – the enhancements to the product and non-Bodog-branded operators in 2010 will dramatically increase liquidity and we expect our unique approach to the rakeback challenge to be game-changing.

PND: What criteria will you have for future non-Bodog licensees?Read Full Story

"Full Tilt Million Dollar Cash Game Features $1.1 Million Pot"

Via:PokerNewsDaily.com
"Full Tilt Poker’s Million Dollar Cash Game featured a $1.1 million pot during its fourth season, which will air on Sky Sports in the United Kingdom in January. The season includes commentary from poker pro Robert Williamson III."

"Some of the game’s top cash game aficionados hit the felts for the Full Tilt Poker spectacular, which recently completed filming in London. Now, the city will play host to the 2009 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Europe festivities, which officially kick off today with a £1,075 buy-in No Limit Hold’em event. Headlining the Full Tilt Poker Million Dollar Cash Game roster was none other than Tom “durrrr” Dwan, who was joined at the table by several sponsored pros of the online poker site, including Phil Ivey, Chris Ferguson, Gus Hansen, Mike Matusow, Allen Cunningham, and Patrik Antonius."

"The general public recently nominated Dwan for the 2009 Poker Hall of Fame class, although a committee stripped him of his eligibility on the grounds that he did not stand the test of time. Dwan is currently battling against Antonius in the Durrrr Challenge online, with Antonius nursing a $34,000 lead after 23,197 hands. The two tangled early on in the Million Dollar Cash Game in London, getting it in pre-flop for a $500,000 pot. Antonius held pocket kings against Dwan’s pocket aces, but a king on the flop gave the veteran a set and the win in the hand. Online, it’s been a seesaw battle between Dwan and Antonius, with “durrrr” posting 3:1 odds that he could beat any player in $200/$400 Pot Limit Omaha or No Limit Hold’em over 50,000 hands."

"Dwan reclaimed his losses in a hand against Cyril Mouly. Then, the largest pot in televised poker history occurred. In it, Dwan raised pre-flop and Ivey re-raised from the small blind. The flop fell Q-3-5 with two clubs and Ivey led out for $40,000. Dwan made the call to see the four of hearts hit the turn. Ivey once again bet, Dwan pushed the action to $240,000, and “The Tiger Woods of Poker” shoved over the top. Coverage provided by Full Tilt Poker noted that Dwan snap-called the all-in, turning over 6-7 for the nuts. Ivey, meanwhile, showed A-2 for a smaller straight. Ivey was drawing dead on the river, shipping the massive $1.1 million pot to Dwan."Read Full Story

"Former Full Tilt Employee Jason Newitt Files Suit"

Via:PokerDailyNews.com "The list of people and organizations that have a bone to pick with Full Tilt Poker keeps growing. Two new lawsuits involving Full Tilt have brought the online poker room into the legal spotlight."

"First, news broke that Brandon McSmith is suing Poker PROductions, the production company behind “High Stakes Poker,” “Poker After Dark,” and NBC’s “Face the Ace,” the latter of which features a roster of Full Tilt Pros facing off against contestants trying to win $1 million. McSmith alleges he came up with a similar idea for a poker-themed game show called “The All Star Poker Challenge” and is suing Poker PROductions for $85 million. No legal action is being taken by Smith towards Full Tilt directly, but the company’s close ties to the show mean they will have a vested interest in the matter should it go any further."

"The other lawsuit that came to light this week involves Full Tilt Poker in a much more direct capacity. Pokerati.com broke the news that former Full Tilt employee Jason “JDN” Newitt is filing suit against Full Tilt Poker, Tiltware, Pocket Kings Consulting, and both Howard Lederer and Raymond Bitar. According to the case filing in the Nevada court system, Newitt is claiming that “he was unfairly fired and that his distribution payments were unfairly ceased. Defendants then took control of his ownership.” In other words, Newitt allegedly owned a percentage of Full Tilt Poker and is no longer receiving payments that stem from that percentage."

"Prior to filing suit, Newitt was best known in the poker world for accidentally leaking internal correspondence between himself and Howard Lederer regarding potential sponsorship of 2007 Aussie Millions runner-up Jimmy “gobboboy” Fricke. Newitt inadvertently forwarded an e-mail to Fricke in which Lederer referred to Fricke as a “freak” and a “kind of a weird dude.” Fricke then posted it on the TwoPlusTwo poker forum. In addition to simply revealing Lederer’s candid thoughts on the young online pro, the e-mail, which was copied to Bitar and Robert Wolf, shed some light on exactly how big of a role Lederer and Bitar play in the day-to-day dealings of the popular online poker site."Read Full Story

"Nevada Gaming Revenues Fall 12.48% in July"

Via:PokerNewDaily.com "While the economy may be picking up steam worldwide, news from Las Vegas revealed that Nevada casino gambling revenues were down 12.48% in July year over year. Statewide, the Nevada Gaming Control Board reported revenues, or “win,” of $872 million."

"In July of 2008, casinos reported a win of $997 million. In Clark County, which includes Las Vegas, revenues two months ago were $729 million, off 10.92% year over year from the $819 million recorded in 2008. On the Las Vegas Strip, where poker-friendly resorts like the Bellagio and Venetian can be found, revenues came in at $461 million in July, a drop of 11.14% compared to the same period last year. July saw an influx of visitors to the Rio and other Harrah’s resorts for the 2009 World Series of Poker (WSOP), which kicked off its Main Event on the 3rd of the month."

"In Downtown Las Vegas, which includes the Golden Nugget, the setting for the first and fifth seasons of “High Stakes Poker,” and the L.A. The Boulder Strip includes establishments like Green Valley Ranch and Sam’s Town, while CasaBlanca and the Eureka Casino call Mesquite home." Read Full Story

"Poker Players Cash in on System Glitch"

Via:EveryJoe.com "According to this poker gossip blog, a huge glitch was uncovered over at PokerStars. Sounds like for awhile, if you accepted a rematch at the Sit-N-Gos with a balance of zero, you were granted a free game.

Now I don’t know how much the buy-in games were for, but if you take this at face value, sounds like you could be getting free 1-1 match ups for any sit-n-go game as long as you ended with a zeroed out balance. If true, this was/is a huge deal. We’re talking playing on house money with no repercussions here.

I would test this out for you, but I don’t currently have a zeroed out account. My guess is that since it’s public, PokerStars has shut off the free for all, but if you’re at zero after a sit-n-go game, by all means accept and see what happens."

"Darvin Moon The Dream"

Via ESPN.com "This year, Darvin Moon is the man in the position so many poker players around the world could only dream of. Not since Jamie Gold -- who had 29 percent of the chips with his nearest competitor, Allen Cunningham, holding 19 percent -- has a player entered the final table with such a dominating chip lead. This logging company owner from Oakland, Md., has 30 percent of the chips on the table and is the oddsmakers' favorite, even over seven-time bracelet winner Phil Ivey. The most fascinating aspect of this fairy tale is that, for Moon, it is more like a bizarre dream that makes no sense whatsoever.

"In the life of Darvin Moon, simply participating in the 2009 WSOP main event was a dream itself.

"You know what? I would have been happy with nothing," Moon stated. For the current chip leader, the main event meant embarking on multiple first-time experiences. Moon traveled across the country to Las Vegas for the very first time. In order to see Sin City and the Rio, he would need to fly in the first large airplane flight in his life. Finally, the WSOP would be his first main event poker tournament ever." READ FULL STROY
